Last Friday 6th September, Gilbert Stephens Solicitors were delighted to be one of the sponsors at the Mansbridge Balment Charity Golf Day at Okehampton Golf Club. Mansbridge Balment estate agents have over 45 years of experience in the property market and have offices in Okehampton, Tavistock, Yelverton, and Bere Peninsula.
Despite the rain, it was a brilliant turn out with businesses from all over East Devon coming to support this wonderful charitable event. Last Wednesday 28th August, Gilbert Stephens Young Professionals Network met for their bimonthly event at Sandford Orchards in Crediton. Members enjoyed a delicious evening of pizza and cider pairing at the full working farm. Sandford Orchards specialise in Barrel and Stone fresh, stone baked sourdough pizzas, in addition to a wide range of ciders and juices. Read more…

On Sunday 1st September, Gilbert Stephens Solicitors were proud to sponsor a hole at the 43rd annual charity Pro-Am at Exeter Golf and Country Club. This Golf Day was special to the firm as it was partly organised by ex-employee and friend, Peter Bennett. Peter recently retired from his role as Senior Private Client Legal Executive at Gilbert Stephens and is now a dedicated Men’s Golf Captain at the Exeter Golf and Country Club.
It was a resoundingly successful and busy day for Exeter Golf and Country Club as 47 teams from across Devon and Cornwall arrived to participate in a friendly game of golf. All golfers were extremely grateful for the glorious sunshine which beamed down over the golf course all afternoon. Read more…

On Sunday 26th August, Gilbert Stephens Solicitors were proud sponsors of the bi-annual Dartmoor Charity Speed Shear at the beautiful village of South Zeal.
As always, the Charity Speed Shear honoured Devon Air Ambulance as one of their chosen charities. Devon Air Ambulance is an outstanding emergency medical service operating twenty-four hours a day, to anyone in need. Read more…

Earlier this year, Gilbert Stephens Solicitors put together a team of fifteen who took part in the Race for Life Pretty Muddy event on Saturday 20th July at Westpoint Arena. Our team dressed in personalised pink tops and green tutus as they tackled the 5k muddy obstacle course in memory of our colleague Liz Govier, who sadly lost her battle to Cancer last November. Gilbert Stephens Solicitors is a strong supporter of our local agricultural Shows and we have attended Honiton, Okehampton and Chagford Shows throughout August. This year was the 119th Chagford Agricultural and Horticultural Show, which was held on Thursday 15th August at the Dogmarsh Fields, beside the River Teign, on beautiful Dartmoor.
Chagford Show is a marvellous family day out. It is a traditional agricultural show offering a unique mix of farming, crafts and horticulture with a dedicated food hall promoting local food and drink as well as lots of live music to entertain throughout the day. The main ring had a full day of special attractions – this year saw the Tigers Children’s Motorcycle Display Team, Terrier Racing with Ian Brackenbury and Birds of Prey Flying Display among others. There were also many other attractions, events and over 200 trade stands to browse. We had the huge pleasure of being one of them. Read more…

Last Thursday, Gilbert Stephens Solicitors had an absolutely fantastic day at the 112th Okehampton Agricultural Show. The Okehampton Show is one of largest one-day agricultural shows in Devon with over 200 trade stands and exhibitors, equine and livestock shows, delicious local food and drink in the Food Hall, children’s entertainment and shopping in the Craft Hall. The firm were proud to be ticket sponsors and road sign sponsors of the Okehampton Show this year.
Our stand really stood out this year as it was adorned with an incredible balloon garland which trailed across the front of our marquee. We were exceptionally lucky with the weather and many visitors were grateful for a cold glass of Pimm’s, pasties from local bakers Endacotts, cream teas and other refreshments while the children were excited to receive one of our bright green balloons and even more delighted to get their face painted by our fantastic face painter. Airbnb appeared as an entity in 2008 and in the 11 years since it has become an impressive worldwide business. Last year, Airbnb was recorded as operating in 191 countries and had over 4 million property listings on its website.
As Airbnb continues to grow, however, landlords, both long term and short term, are becoming concerned about tenants sub-letting their properties to cash in on the easy business model, thereby potentially breaching the terms of their leases. It is important for tenants to realise that taking money in return for short-term stays in their home comprises both subletting and running a business from the property, both of which are usually prohibited in both long and short term leases. This year, Sidmouth Lions Club’s annual Great Duck Derby on the River Sid took place on Sunday 21st July. In addition to the main public Duck Race, the event included a Corporate Duck Race in which local businesses in and around the Sid Valley, including Gilbert Stephens Solicitors, sponsored the little red corporate ducks.
Some younger Gilbert Stephens team members joined in the fun and very much enjoyed wearing their customised t-shirts with a green duck on the front and their names on the back. They loved the friendly competitive atmosphere from everyone watching the two duck races. Along with many other spectators, they were especially entertained by the huge flock of yellow ducks, each sponsored by a member of the public, as they entered the river from the starting point bridge.
