Training begins for the Nello Century Cycle Challenge8th May 2019
This year, Gilbert Stephens Solicitors will be entering a team into the Nello Century Cycle Challenge 2019, in aid of the FORCE Cancer Charity. We participated in this non-competitive charity event last year and raised an incredible sum of over £2,000. We will be riding this year in memory of Liz Govier, one of our solicitors, who sadly passed away last year after a brave battle with cancer.
We are very pleased that the Gilbert Stephens team have banded together and are now in training for this year’s Nello. Our team includes 8 members, including supervising partner Don Middlemost, who is a keen cyclist and was instrumental last year in keeping up morale over this test of endurance. Some members of the team will be cycling the 55 mile route, and some will be taking on the full 100 mile route.
Last week, the team went out for their first training ride, completed in rather fresh, windy conditions with the odd rain shower. Despite the weather, the group completed the 57km route (that’s about 35 miles) unscathed and in the rather good time of 2 hours and 47 minutes. This was a challenging first ride, with many inclines, but we encouraged each other along and thankfully had the weekend to recover before getting back to work.
The Nello starts and finishes at Topsham Rugby Ground with the route taking 1,500 participants ‘over the roof of Exmoor’. With incredible views of our local landscape and scenic country roads, riders can have a break in Nomansland to recharge before heading back out to complete this great accomplishment.
Sarah Daniels, Head of Fundraising at FORCE Cancer Charity, says, “The Nello is a day when old friends and new come together to take part in an exciting, enduring and enjoyable day out. Everybody has their own personal reason for taking part – but they are also all there to support FORCE and raise funds to support people affected by cancer in our area.”
The Nello involves so many people in the community, as many offer food, drink, music and encouragement along the route, with a physio at the end to help with any sports injuries!
The focus of this event is to raise awareness and much needed funds for the work of Devon based FORCE Cancer Charity who support people who have been diagnosed with cancer and their families close to home.
Gilbert Stephens are looking forward to being involved again in this event. We will keep you updated on our training progress – look out for our green jerseys zipping through the local countryside over the next few weeks!
